Prayers

The Holy Souls Society are a lay Catholic prayer apostolate devoted to prayer for the Holy Souls in purgatory.

The Holy Souls Society exists to restore the Church’s ancient devotion to prayer for the dead—especially the holy souls in purgatory who are being purified in God’s merciful love and who depend upon the prayers of the living.

Through prayer, sacrifice, and remembrance, we seek to console the suffering souls, revive forgotten Catholic devotions, and restore a sacred reverence for death as part of the Christian journey toward eternal life.

As part of this work, we prayerfully visit cemeteries to intercede for the dead, particularly those who are forgotten or have no one to pray for them. We hope, God willing, to one day visit cemeteries throughout the world, offering prayer, remembrance, and mercy for souls long unseen and unheard.

We also hold a deep respect for history and the silent witness it preserves. Funerary art, epigraphy, and historic cemeteries speak to the faith of generations past, reminding us that prayer for the dead was once woven naturally into daily Christian life. These places help us remember not only names and dates, but souls, stories, and the hope of resurrection.

When we pray for the Holy Souls, we perform one of the greatest works of mercy. Though they cannot help themselves, ancient Christian tradition holds that the souls in purgatory, united to God’s will, do pray for us even as we pray for them.

You are invited to join us in prayer for the souls in purgatory and to take part in this sacred work of mercy, uniting the Church on earth with the Church being purified.
